Similar terminologies in biology

Hey there!
The world of science is a confusing arena of terminologies and nomenclatures. Its quite normal to get messed up because of this and doing so makes it hard to memorize such terms.

So here's a closer look at some of few such common terms, as an attempt at giving you a knack over the vast knowledge. Of course, the list wont suffice, but I do hope it inspires, :)

Sl. No.
Terminology
Meaning
Picture/Concept map/Animation/Video
1
Metamorphosis
The transformation of a larva into the adult form.
2
Metastasis
Spread of cancer cells to new regions of the body
3
Metabolism
The chemical processes, taken as a whole, occurring within an organism.
Two types- anabolism and catabolism

4
Metaphase
The second stage of mitosis or The second stage of meiosis I(metaphase I) or of meiosis II (metaphase II).

5
Metagenesis
The alternation of generations between sexual and asexual reproduction.
Eg. Obelia

6
Transcription
The synthesis of a complementary RNA through the use of a DNA template.

7
Translation
Synthesis of a protein on an mRNA template

8
Transpiration
Loss of water from the leaves of a plant; creates an osmotic gradient that draws nutrient-laden water up from the roots.
9
Translocation
Transfer of a segment of one chromosome to another chromosome.

10
Translocation
Movement of materials from leaves to other tissues throughout the plant
11
Transposon
DNA sequence that can insert itself at a new site in the genome.

12
Transposase
An enzyme capable of catalyzing the insertion of a transposon.

13
Transversion
substitution of a (two ring) purine for a (one ring) pyrimidine or vice versa, in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA).
(base-pair substitution).

14
Transcriptome
The full complement of transcripts present in a given tissue at a particular time.

15
Rhizopus
Rhizopus is a genus of common saprophytic fungi on plants and specialized parasites on animals. They are found on a wide variety of organic substrates, including "mature fruits and vegetables", jellies, syrups, leather, bread, peanuts, and tobacco.
16
Rhizoid
a filamentous outgrowth or root hair on the underside of the thallus in some lower plants, especially mosses and liverworts, serving both to anchor the plant and (in terrestrial forms) to conduct water.
17
Rhizobium

a nitrogen-fixing bacterium that is common in the soil, especially in the root nodules of leguminous plants.
18
Rhizophora

. Rhizophora "rhizo" meaning root and "phora" meaning bear or carry in reference to the numerous prop roots growing from the trunk and branches of the mangrove.
19
Rhizome
A continuously growing horizontal underground stem which puts out lateral shoots and adventitious roots at intervals.
20
Ribosome
An organelle consisting of RNA and associated proteins found in large numbers in the cytoplasm of living cells. They bind messenger RNA and transfer RNA to synthesize polypeptides and proteins.
21
·         Centriole

each of a pair of minute cylindrical organelles near the nucleus in animal cells, involved in the development of spindle fibres in cell division.

22
·         Centromere
·
the region of a chromosome to which the microtubules of the spindle attach, via the kinetochore, during cell division.

23
·         Centrosome
·
an organelle near the nucleus of a cell which contains the centrioles (in animal cells) and from which the spindle fibres develop in cell division.
